Thermodynamic Diagrams
In August, 1996 Chemical Engineering Journal page 110A there is a graph of volume versus pressure for pure Nitrogen by Yaws, Seth, and Han. This page attempts to produce that graph for mixtures as well as pure chemicals. It works much better for pures. The second graph in the paper by Yaws, Seth, and Han is enthalpy versus pressure with lines of constant temperature. This graph is produced by this web page as well. Since calculations near the critical point are difficult, the end of the phase envelope may be truncated.
This web page allows one to select a pure component or a mixture of components and produce a graph of pressure vs. volume with lines of constant temperature. A second graph is pressure vs. enthalpy with lines of constant temperature. Both graphs have a line for the phase envelope. This page is uses the Peng-Robinson equation of state to predict the properties of these mixtures. The calculations are much faster and sometimes more accurate for a pure components than for mixtures.
These calculations are made using the most recent experimental version of the thermodynamics library that is included in the CANARY by Quest Consequence Modeling Software available from Quest Consultants Inc. The results should be considered a demonstration only and not used for design purposes.
All of these calculations use the Peng/Robinson equation of state. The calculations are based on predictions of vapor/liquid equilibrium. If the vapor/liquid equilibrium cannot exist for the mixture, temperature, and pressure that you select, then the answers may not be good. If components freeze or if components separate into more than one liquid phase or if polar chemicals are mixed with water, the answers are not likely to be good. The answers are usually excellent at high temperatures and low pressures.
To try it out, create an input mixture using the form below and hit the submit button to start the calculations.
