Quest's personnel have directed numerous large-scale field tests of hazardous fluids. These tests provided fundamental data on the behavior of hazardous fluid releases, including release rate, vaporization rate, vapor dispersion, and fire radiation characteristics. Some of the tests provided engineering data on the effectiveness of hazard mitigation systems, including water curtains, high-expansion and low-expansion foams, and dry chemical fire extinguishing agents. The following materials were involved in these tests:

Ammonia Butane Carbon Disulfide CFC-11
Chlorine Crude Oil Cyclohexane Ethylene Oxide
LNG LPG Methylamine Natural Gas
Normal Hexane Propane Sulfuric Acid Hydrogen Fluoride

Quest's professionals have directed several industry/government sponsored projects involving releases of superheated fluids. These tests, conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy Liquefied Gaseous Fuels Spill Test Facility near Las Vegas, Nevada, were designed to provide information needed to quantitatively predict the characteristics of aerosols formed by such releases.

Test Sponsors

Individual companies, industry associations, research groups, and government agencies have all sponsored test programs designed and conducted by Quest personnel. Some of these test sponsors are listed below.
  • Environmental Protection Agency - EPA
  • Department of Energy - DOE
  • Department of Transportation - DOT
  • National Bureau of Standards - NBS
  • Center for Chemical Process Safety - CCPS
  • Petroleum Environmental Research Forum - PERF
Quest personnel have also conducted research and tests on several aspects of materials flammability and fire resistance. These ranged from ignition and flame spread tests on solid materials to API Standard 607 fire tests on ball valves.
