Layer of Protection Analysis is an alternative means of assigning target (SIL) values to instrumentation loops. Because LOPA is a semi-quantitative methodology, it requires additional preparation before SIL values can be assigned to reduce risk. The extra preparation for LOPA is needed to define risk reduction measures for the various layers of protection.
